It's funny the things you stumble across in London - a little groove time with the lead singer of Friendly Fires, a bit of an impromptu photo shoot with Bambi Northwood and hey presto, a winning combination of my two favourite things - music and fashion. I use the term photo shoot loosely of course, I doubt Bambi was in any mood to whip out one of her famous $30, 000 pouts but here she is looking effortlessly good at the London club night 'Bugged Out'. Even on a bad angle Bambi manages to look mint.

image courtesy of Bear + Mouse

gaga officially gaga?

We all know Lady Gaga is eccentric and never fails to go above and beyond when it comes to outlandish fashion. I have to say, this takes the cake. Or the cow, depending on how you want to look at it. At the MTV VMA's three days ago, Gaga rocked up in a dress made entirely of meat. What's more disturbing about this turn of events is that Gaga's stylist is now the new creative director for french fashion house Thierry Mugler. It is interesting however, to see what the experts had to say when asked what Gaga's meat dress meant: 1) an anti-fashion statement, 2) a feminist statement, 3) a commentary on aging and decay, 4) a comment on our hypocritical attitude toward meat or 5) no statement at all - the joke's on us for thinking otherwise. Leave it to Lady Gaga to shock the fashion world, once again.

the kob

So I usually start my day by checking my emails with the hope that Patty Huntington has posted something new. I love frockwriter, I think it's probably the best blog going - informative, entertaining and fresh. I daresay I blindly and faithfully believe in everything the woman has to say on the world of fashion.

Today, I respectfully have to say I am not a fan of this new trend Huntington has highlighted called the 'Kob' after Abby Lee Kershaw's new hair cut. Of course, Kershaw has the bone structure and delicate features that could make spiked punk hair a new trend for all young girls. Alas, this 'Kob' I fear is a trend that I would like to see skipped. Maybe it's because I'm jealous that Kershaw can so effortlessly wear her hair anyway she likes. In my opinion, the drawn back fringe is out dated and unflattering on many face shapes. According to Huntington the trend is spreading like wild fire in Sydney hair salons, let's just hope it doesn't creep on up to Brisbane where let's face it, fashion is not exactly taken to by many people - that is a whole other blog post on its way...

image: beauty.lovelyish.com

so what paul dempsy?

So blogosphere, I've been a pretty crap blogger of late. Yes, my eleven followers, I'm terribly sorry to keep you in the lurch. So what do I have to offer you? Tales of my thrilling life? Stories of a poor University student, struggling to indulge myself in the latest fashions because I'm transitioning between part time jobs?

No friends, I have something with a much deeper meaning that I'm sure you'll appreciate far more then the rants of a spiteful 20 year old with a chip on my shoulder because assignments are sucking the life out of me.

Paul Dempsy fans beware. Yes, let's all take a moment to appreciate the hypnotic melodic sweet mellow sounds of his raspy tones. There is no denying this man is a lyrical messiah. On a completely unrelated side note, he's enormous - I met him once when I was 18 and I ogled him like a small fat child ogles the reminents of their yogo cup. I had no shame when I walked up to him, craned my neck just so I could see the bottom of his chin and asked him why Something for Kate weren't doing anything. The conversation went a little like this:

Georgia: Paul, I didn't think you would be so tall in person!

Paul: Er, Thanks, and you are?

Georgia: Oh sorry Paul, I'm Georgia and a huge fan of yours, what have you been up to lately?

Paul: Well actually I'm doing some solo recordings, not sure where it's going but hopefully I'll have something out by next year

Georgia: How exciting...

*awkward silence ensues*

Georgia: Well lovely chatting you Paul...

Two years later and I still haven't heard the end of Paul Dempsy's solo career. Thankfully in music news, Dempsy is writing in New York for the new Something for Kate album. No confirmation yet as to when the album will be recorded but this is quite exciting, given Dempsy's solo album was indeed successful however repetitive. I love supporting Australian music as much as the next person but one criticism I have of Triple J was the overplay of Dempsy's album 'Everything is True'. This isn't a criticism of Dempsy, simply the hype of an album I personally deem to be alright (apologies, I couldn't think of a better word).

I'll leave you with my all time favourite SFK song which formed the basis for my love of indie music as an eleven year old. From the album 'Echolalia' in 2001, here's 'Monster'.

adventures of a splendid nature

Splendour in the Grass is a mere 5 weeks away and I am drooling over all things festival related. I'm researching the perfect outfits for the three night extravaganza set to be held for the first time at Woodfordia on Queensland's Sunny Coast this year - tres exciting!

So, here is my dilemma: the festival is in the middle of Winter, Woodford will be freezing, I will be camping and there is no electricity or warm running water. How does one dress for this environment? I could slum it and wear tracksuit pants with a hoodie but that just wouldn't be in the spirit of the festival. So I have researched and internet shopped my little heart out and devised several outfits that are both warm and chic!

Day 1: I need to find a top that goes with these leggings from American Apparel, these will be what I wear on day 1. I'm thinking to match the pattern with some crazy thrift store find or a nice and over priced designer T. Thoughts?

Day 2: Day Dress + Biker Boots + Boyfriend Blazer - I'm yet to find the perfect dress but I'm going to buy these boots:

Day 3: Three quarter length cream knife pleat skirt from Miss Mouse boutique (pray for me that this hasn't been sold yet!) + floral singlet + Monochrome Converse Sneakers - it still remains to be seen how I will keep warm in this...

The line-up this year includes THE STROKES (I would die to meet Julian Casablancas and love-love-love his new album), 90s punk band THE PIXIES, blonde beauty GOLDFRAPP and red headed indie siren FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE, to name a few. One thing for certain is that I will be laughing, crying, screaming, flashing and yahooing the weekend away, do look out for my follow up with pictures from the weekend.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7ffVT1WZ8Fw/TCMhWRoSMAI/AAAAAAAAAMc/NpuWcyzocps/s1600/pixies.jpg" style="text-decoration: none; Which is besides the point, anyway as I was flipping through some online news websites I discovered that my all time favourite TV series SKINS was being adapted to the silver screen.

As you can imagine I bounced around the kitchen in sheer delight while my mother continued to ask me why I was so excited about sports compression garments. I quickly informed her of the good news which did nothing to alleviate her puzzled expression. None the less, let me tell you why SKINS is the most awesome show ever.

You have seasons one and two which star About A Boy's Nicholas Holt and Slumdog Millionaire's Dev Patel and an array of other British actors who make up the cast. Each season focuses on the trials and tribulations of being young, horny, randy and crazy. You have the narcissistic borderline sociopathic genius as Tony (Holt), anorexic head case Cassie, clarinet playing uptight Jal, poorly informed on fashion wannabe chain smoker Michelle, Palistinian wannabe sex god Anwar (Patel), homosexual metrosexual dancing queen Maxxie and finally pill popping sweet as pie drop kick Chris. An eclectic mix to say the least. Its a show that throws in your face all sorts of controversial societal issues and is too addictive to stop watching.

Now introducing the third and fourth seasons starring Kaya Scodelario as the troubled Effy who dabbles in too many drugs and as a result of the combination of this and her crumbling family life, develops depression and tries to kill herself (apologies if you haven't got that far into the series yet). I won't go into the rest of the cast who are equally as important to the plot but for me Effy and Freddie are the modern day Sid and Nancy that are the hook line and sinker of the show. Freddie is your average pretty skater boy with mummy issues played by Luke Pasqualino. I could talk for years about how beautiful Freddie is but I'm sure if I just post a picture of him you'll soon see what I'm talking about.

Not to mention Kaya is also painfully beautiful, it makes it difficult to tear your eyes off the pair. Sigh.

The transition does pose a few questions for SKINS fans however. Who will be in it? The original cast? Who will write it? The original writers? Will they put big Hollywood faces in it? I personally think it should be a continuation of the final episode, but a couple of years later. I know it sounds horrible but I would love to see Effy regress into her old self, the new stable Effy isn't really doing it for me.

So, I think I've made my point. SKINS is epic and hopefully the movie doesn't bastardise the series. I've also found some amazing editorial shoots with Kaya...

<img style="display:block; Those never been done before, bold shapes with outlandish silhouettes we were so desperately missing in the world of black and white, the blend of fabrics, the lycra, the silk and my god - those head pieces.

I was in wardrobe heaven when I first walked into her Brisbane store back in 2008 and since my first step into that store, a certain fascination overwhelmed me. I knew then of course that Gail was set for big things, she was already being catapulted into international acclaim. So here is my beef, and I LOVE Gail - lord knows I wish I could afford even a sliver of fabric from one of her designs - but I want to see something else. Is it too bold for me to say that the black and white palette is becoming old? I don't claim to be an expert on fashion, I'm simply a hungry consumer and avid admirer however when a designer like Gail Reed comes into my life and shows me that there are dresses in this world that are worth three months of my pay and social life, I want to see more.

Her collections are what I would call consistently good. However, I hate to say that consistency doesn't always produce greatness. I daresay Gail is playing it safe.

i get to do some pretty cool shit

So I've been recently informed by my supervisor at Red PR that I will in fact be working at the up and coming Sex and the City 2 premiere in Brisbane. I'm super excited because in true SATC style the event is themed accordingly with cosmopolitans being freely poured by good looking wait staff, champage, new york slice pizza (YUM!) and lolly buffet - I'll have to check that one out because to be honest I don't know the company. Oh, and there will be fabulous little gift bags on our seats with prizes and give aways from the events partners and sponsors. Anyway, I just wanted to have a little squeal of excitement over the matter because my role will include assisting VIP guests and rubbing shoulders with Brisbane media guests, not too shabby for an intern?

So girlfriends (and boyfriends), whip out your Manolos and if you're as excited as me its sure to be amazing.

I also just found these bottom two images, yes from the movie. I've been meaning to rant and rave about the new release from Kele, lead singer of Bloc Party. Now I am a HUGE fan of Bloc Party, I've seen them live, have all the albums, I've MET Kele himself, yes, and I've also made several mixed best of Bloc Party CDs for my friends - who all looked at me funny when I bounced around with stacks of CDs, throwing them away like candy - since I first became obsessed with them as a young 15 year old. This band literally sings my feelings. (I'm kidding, they're great and everything but I mean who says a band sings their feelings?....)

SO after my enormous tangent, lets talk about Kele. I mean honestly, what a babe right? Just to clarify, the urban dictionary defines 'babe' as 'a girl or guy who is easy on the eyes, talented, and good looking, overall just very sexy.' Well for a gay black dude I think he is.

Onto his latest release - I didn't appreciate it at first, I should have being an original Bloc Party lover, but I couldn't get a grasp on the transition from the old rock-psychadelic-house type music Bloc Party epically delivers to Kele's new plain old house music style. I replayed the song 'Tenderoni' several times to try and see what he was getting at. It was definitely a step away from traditional BP sounds but the more I listened the more I just couldn't get the sound of that synthesizer out of my head. For any critics of this God of a man - shame on you. This sound was at first a little reminiscent of Cut Copy or hey even New Young Pony Club but I think once I allowed myself to embrace Kele's foray into the solo world of music, I instantaneously fell for his new sound. It's different - not better - but still awesome in comparison to old Bloc Party. Can't wait to get my hands on the new album.

bearly appropriate

Seems like there are quite a few little boutique photogs popping up all around town. First we had Peny Lane who I'll go out there and say was the first Brisbane nightlife/street/fashion photography which was followed closely by Romance in my Pants, then everyone followed the trend and it looks like it doesn't really take much to get noticed in this small town. My very own sister, Tessa Colcough (Mouse) and her friend Ian Knight (Bear) recently started a nightlife/street/gigs photography venture entitled Bear + Mouse and I must say I'm rather impressed at the progress. I'll also be throwing around some branding strategies with the team so expect great things! Another lovely photographer blossoming into exposure (like my pun?) is Calum Spencer who if my quick Facebook stalk is correct is working alongside Romance in my Pants. I love what he's doing with colour and his images are so refreshing in a sea of try hard nightlife photography.

<img style="display:block; I had the opportunity this year to publish a short story for the Miss Unkon journey book which was distributed at the show and was super cute to flip through. The rough foliage crackled with every delicate footstep. She had a distinct and certain feeling; her sense of direction urged her forward into the depths of the thick and looming trees. She knew that this should frighten her more than it was and that the treacherous way ahead was supposed to stop her in her tracks.

But the girl wasn’t scared. The night was dark but the moon was full as she gazed into its effervescent glow. The wildlife was out and keeping her company as she continued to make her way.

She didn’t know how she arrived there, one minute she was in a dreamlike state staring into the depths of a beautiful emerald green, the next she was waking up to the sound of the nearby owl. Immediately she knew her purpose, and she knew exactly what needed to be done.

She was getting closer now; she could feel it in the pit of her stomach. The sound of the stream in the distance sent chills down her spine because once she reached the waters edge she would finally reach what she was looking for; who she was looking for. There was a pleasant, familiar smell in the air. It smelt exactly the way she remembered. The woods were becoming thicker and darker; she could no longer see what was in front of her. The sound of the stream was no longer distant and calm, but closer and heavier.

She began to feel scared, she could hear her heartbeat racing in her chest but she was just too close to turn back. A crack in the wall of trees could be seen now, the light from the other side drawing her nearer. In just a few short feet she would reach it.

Finally, she could see the waterfall and the crack was no longer small, but a large opening showing her the valley across the way. She took a deep breath to steady herself and brushed herself of the leaves before taking the final step into the light.

There before her was that same familiar emerald green and the pleasant sweet smell that was her love. He stood only a foot away from her, but a foot was too far.

‘You came,’ he said, taking her face in his hands, ‘I’ve been waiting my whole life to meet you.’

She had no words for him; his emerald green eyes were hypnotic to her though with out warning, the scene began to fade. So was he. She panicked, trying to grab onto anything that would keep them together but it was too late, she was clasping at air. She was fading too, but the smell was now stronger than ever and she was struggling against something that was holding her, shaking her and she couldn’t escape their grip.

The girl woke up, the room was dark but she wasn’t alone.

‘You were having a bad dream,’ said the voice, ‘I’m right here’.

She looked into the eyes of the person holding her, even in the dark she recognised the same emerald green eyes she knew from her dream.

‘Hello,’ she whispered. For those who don't know, Frock has been running since 2006 as a subject for fashion and journalism students who combine their powers to create a shit hot fashion magazine.

This year, I was lucky enough to be apart of what I think will be probably the best year yet. As PR Manager for the magazine, yes, I am also partly doing a little promoting. However, this is not your run of the mill street press consisting of flimsy fillers and half-arsed editorial. We are meticulous, creative and ingenious and take our time to ensure every finite detail of this magazine is absolute perfection.

We launch on the 19 of November this year, distributing around Brisbane and the Gold Coast and for those who want a preview of what we have titled the 'Fearless' issue, have a look at the aesthetics our online team have conjured. I also had the privilege of seeing one of our shoots which screamed Russh editorial with a hint of something else that made my feet tingle.

Frock Paper Scissors is only going to continue to improve as the years come to pass so take a look now for what's on its way this November.

Make sure you go to the survey section and vote for your favourite visual composition!

famous papa

He's been around for a while I won't lie, but it suddenly clicked for me that Jethro Cave is in fact the son of Nick Cave. Ten points for fashion awareness George.

Either way I can't make up my mind on this one. Cave comes across a little cocky in his interview with Russh magazine a couple of months ago and to me it seems he's riding on the tail coats of his father a little bit. I can understand his uniqueness having the whole rock image permanently instilled in his genetic makeup however whether or not Cave is high quality model material is questionable in my humble opinion.

Starting his career at the tender age of fifteen at the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Week he then moved onto working for Australian label Akira the following year at the Sydney Fashion Festival. Now at eighteen years of age, Cave is appearing on the international stage having recently modelled for Balenciaga at Paris Summer Fashion Week 2009.

He is certainly one to watch with no doubt a colourful and long career ahead of him.

(Images and info courtesy of www.thevine.com.au)

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; It's a new movie coming out by Spike Jonze which was taken off the 1960's childrens book and much like Tavi, I too am frothing over this movie. Not to mention the Arcade Fire took care of the soundtrack for the movie so I guess this post isn't too far off my usual topics.

It got me to thinking that there were so many imaginative, creative, wonderful, explorative, hypnotic, melodic, comforting childhood tales that were so rich and unique in their visions and ideas. Think the Never Ending Story where a boy reads a tale that comes to life and a huge white flying furry dragon looking thing is his guide and the Labyrinth where Jennifer Connelly has to steal her baby brother back from an evil goblin king (appropriately portrayed by David Bowie). There were definitely some rad movies back in the 90s where as lately there's a lack of dark and inspiring children's movies.

Where the Wild Things Are is a throwback to the originality we children of the 90s were exposed to and I am so glad something of this calibre has been created.

bad, bad georgia

It seems I have abandoned my blog for quite some time. Someone recently told me that I'd never be any good at anything because I couldn't commit to something like a blog. Well, fuck her, I wasn't listening anyway.

It did however remind me that it might be a good idea to really try to make this blog work despite my obvious lack of an attention span. New plan of action: attend to blog and make it count.

On another note, I was recently invited to the launch of a new designer Irena yesterday. Unfortunately I couldn't make it however I looked at her shoot for the collection titled 'Sex and Landscapes' for AW2010 and it was nothing short of amazing. Using only a black palette her line incorporates loose flowing silhouettes to give a modern feminine feel. This model also looks great in the clothes so the images have turned out beautifully so kudos to the team who were involved in the shoot!

irena. Last night I was lucky enough to bare witness to the final performance of these guys for a while as they go back to the studios to record their next album. Opening with 'Talk Like That' was a definite crowd pleaser, I was immediately shoved four meters forward as the rush of fans hurled themselves into a raging mosh. It was getting ugly.

Two songs in and one girl came crying out of the crowd trying to get out after no doubt being squashed and having several ribs broken. I was amazed to see the amount of slammin hotties that were there, no boys but the girls looked amazing. The chick in front of me was wearing a fur vest and little ksubi shorts (curse her sculpted arse) and I nearly asked to take her picture she looked that effing cute.

Aside from the immaculate standard of female specimen, the show was insane. Van She played first followed by Architecture in Helsinki who pumped up the crowd with 'Hold Music' though after a few of their slower songs I found myself less boppy and dare I say it, a little bored. Finally the Presets graced the stage and all hell broke loose, finishing famously on 'I go hard, I go home' the night came to a brilliant end. Sadly I had no camera, only a measly little phone to capture the moment.

late night studying often prompts me to start meandering on style.com

It is far too easy to get distracted on a night like this. A little research here, some scholarly essay there and we're soon on our way to a winning recipe for some late night procrastination. Just to reiterate I hate hate hate uni and all the assessment that goes with it. Though studying fashion is not with out its perks, writing about something I'm interested in isn't so bad, its the analysis that makes me want to pull out my teeth with blunt rusty pliers.

So here are my picks for winter:

Blazers with shoulder pads, (I know, its an obvious choice, bare with me I'm obsessed) Balmain obviously takes the cake here for invigorating shoulder pads and I know some people yawn at Decarnin's latest collection but I'm sorry, I drool. The lapels on this jacket are devine:

Next is furrrrrr. Enough said, sorry Peta but hey I can't afford the real thing so I'll just talk about it. I must say I only like the smallest bit of fur, our climate doesn't really allow for the heavy fur look anyway. Oddly enough I can't find any looks I like so I'll move on to my next pick.

The fluid high waisted trousers. And as an added bonus they look undeniably comfy. Chloe brought out a series of khaki and beige styled with thin brown belts for their Fall RTW collection. So beautiful:

By the way I am far from done here...

florence and the machine

Florence is a dirty, pretty city where Michel Angelo's David resides and the pigeons are absolutely mammoth. Funny story actually, as I was walking around this city very hungover and not in the best of moods I said to a friend 'wow look at the size of those doves!', knowing full well they were pigeons. Rookie error - don't take a stroll around a historically architectural and beautiful city while resisting the urge to throw up. This is what Top Deck tours do to you.

Florence is also the name of the British singer who fronts the band 'Florence and the Machine'. I was driving home today and couldn't figure out who the hell sings that song 'dog days are over', thinking it was that Icelandic chick Ida Maria. Then the unwitting Scott Dooley announced another song by Florence and the Machine called 'Kiss with a Fist' and I was in musical heaven. The lyrics are hilarious and any scorned girl who has ever been screwed over will get a kick out of them.

Not to mention Florence is a bit of a babe...

george needs clothes

Today was cold and wet, a combination above all others that I loathe. I could hear (and sadly feel) the squelch of the rain penetrating my shabby old black flats. These poor unfortunate shoes, I have put them through hell and back. It seems my wardrobe is a bit like this these days, my shoes are falling apart, my once respectable Claude Maus trousers are pilling at the crutch and I only bought these last year!

Here's a little lesson I've learnt: when travelling, do NOT bring expensive items of clothing. Before I left for Europe these pants were jet black, button still in tact and a far cry from anything close to pilling. Now they've faded into oblivion, seems are coming undone and I most certainly can not bend over too far for fear of them splitting.

Here's another little lesson I've learnt: Claude Maus has produced a disappointing product. Don't get me wrong, I love their A/W09 collection but Claude buddy, you had these pants wrong. They looked fabulous for the first few months I wore them, I had compliments left right and centre but a mere nine months later and my own mother thought I had purchased them at K-Mart. I've sadly laid these pants to rest, however the day was not ruined by my parting with these trousers. To help ease the pain Sue (my mother - I go on a first name basis) fixed me up with new dark blue jeans and a cropped blazer.

Thank you Mumma!

This is from the CM AW/09 collection, probably my most favoured look. It had to be done, this topic absolutely had to be addressed. Now I'm going to go out on a limb here and say not too many people are impressed with this years line up.

Please, get over it.

I'm so sick of punters winging over the fact that this is the third time they've seen Bloc Party or that they couldn't give a shit about Jane's Addiction. In the famous words of Noel Gallagher - stop crying you're heart out. I've never seen a year so full of ungrateful haters. If the line up was so bad then why on earth purchase the $249.95 ticket? Is it so important to attend every festival possible, all for the sake of a few photo uploads on facebook? For those true admirers of the line up, I commend you. Buying tickets was stressful enough, we don't need a bunch of tacky posers there to spoil the weekend.

On a lighter note, it will be the first time I've seen Bloc Party live. I hear they're amazing and I was so excited when I finally had my claws on a ticket that a single glistening tear of joy rolled down my cheek. It's true, I have witnesses.

sharing is caring

The time has come for me to submit myself to the phenomenon of blogging. I've tried it before, I must admit but now it seems as a journalist, blogging is somewhat pivotal to career success. Take for example a good friend of mine who actually inspired me to start blogging. She created fashionfalsehood a couple of weeks ago and has found immediate success with in the blogosphere.

So why shouldn't I give it ago? How better to spend the time I should be investing on writing assignments than writing about things I actually give a shit about.

Like music and fashion?

I should think so.

Now to get back to what I should be writing about - ironically an assignment on how online style blogging will have detrimental implications for print journalism...
